Slits own throat to attempt suicide, both critical at TMH

Jamshedpur, May 22: A Burmamines resident slit the throat of his son’s mother-in-law with a knife in Sido Kanhu Basti near Railway Carriage Colony under Burmamines police station area on Sunday. After attempting to kill her, he slit his own throat and set the LPG cylinder in her house afire in a bid to commit suicide, police said.

The accused, identified as Ranjeet Rai, and the victim, Soma Chakravarty, have been admitted to Tata Main Hospital. Their condition was reportedly critical, cops said.

Sources said Ranjeet Rai reached the matrimonial house of his elder daughter Seema in Sido Kanhu Basti this morning. During conversation with Seema’s mother-in-law, Ranjeet got irked over some issue. After a heated exchange of words, Ranjeet reportedly assaulted Soma Chakravarty and slit her throat with a knife. Critically injured, Soma ran out of her house and raised an alarm to seek help. Local residents rushed to help Seema, but could not muster courage to go near Ranjeet as he held a knife in his hand. On seeing the mob, Ranjeet went inside the house and cut the LPG hose in the kitchen and set it afire. The fire spread in the house, burning the TV, fridge, music system and other household articles, sources said.

The residents called the police and somehow doused the fire. Cops soon sent Ranjeet and Seema to hospital. An FIR has been registered against Ranjeet in this connection, cops said.
