MILAN (AP) — It is perhaps only fitting that in a country where pasta is the staple dish, a player nicknamed “The Noodle” starred in his debut.
New signing Ángel Di María was at the heart of every good move from Juventus in its opening match on Monday. He scored one goal and set up another in a 3-0 win over Sassuolo as the Bianconeri looked very different from the team often labelled as dull and boring last season.
That’s why an injury he also picked up is such a blow.
Di María was forced off in the 66th minute with an injury to his left thigh and will definitely miss Monday’s game at Sampdoria. He could be back for the following crunch match against Roma depending on the results of further tests at the end of next week.
“Maybe I should have taken him off when we went 3-0 up but he was enjoying himself,” Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said.
Di María is the latest injury problem for Juventus, which is already without fellow signing Paul Pogba as well as Federico Chiesa, Kaio Jorge and goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny.
However, Moise Kean and Adrien Rabiot are available after being suspended for the opener.
There was not much fanfare when Di María joined Juventus last month on a free transfer after seven years at Paris Saint-Germain. The signing of the 34-year-old Argentina international was overshadowed by Pogba flying into Turin the same day and completing his return to the club just days later.
But fans at the Allianz Stadium — and the opposition — were bedazzled by Di María on Monday. Nicknamed “El Fideo” ("The Noodle") because of his slender frame, Di María was everywhere, weaving his way between defenders and at the core of every Juventus attack.
He scored the opener and almost doubled his tally before providing a delightful assist for Dušan Vlahović’s second of the night.
“Playing with Ángel Di María is an incredible sensation, a great pleasure,” Vlahović said. “I thank him for the assist and I hope to receive and also give many more.
“I think that we will work well together, but the important thing is that the team works and wins. Ángel played an extraordinary game.”
It wasn’t all positive for Juventus, however. It got off to a sluggish start and there was little sign of what was to come after Sassuolo had several chances to strike first.
Matters changed after the cooling break halfway through the first period. Juventus resumed with a much-changed attitude after Allegri had talked to his players.
“It was a moment in which they had had quite a few shots, we couldn’t manage to control the match. I moved Di María wide and (Juan) Cuadrado on the other side, I didn’t say anything special to the guys though," Allegri said. “I changed it a bit to cover the field better. From that moment on we had the right game. Either I did badly at first or well afterwards.”
Juventus’ main title rivals — Napoli, Roma and the Milan clubs — also won their openers last weekend. It was the first time in more than 50 years that there were no draws in the opening round of the season.
Inter Milan hosts Spezia on Saturday with AC Milan playing Monza and Napoli taking on Atalanta the following day. Roma plays Cremonese on Monday.

Saki Baba routed Monet Chun of Canada 11 and 9 on Sunday to become the second Japanese winner in U.S. Women’s Amateur history. The 17-year-old Baba won the last six holes, ending the match with a birdie on the par-3 27th hole at Chambers Bay. Baba joined 1985 champion Michiko Hattori as the only Japanese winners. Baba was one of four amateurs to make the cut in the U.S. Women’s Open at Pine Needles, tying for 49th. She shared medalist honors and reached the round of 32 in the U.S. Girls’ Junior at The Club at Olde Stone.
Stetson Bennett could’ve gone out on top. Instead, the former walk-on will suit up again in the red and black, looking to lead Georgia to a repeat as football national champion. Bennett’s return as the Bulldogs quarterback was somewhat surprising. But having such an experienced player at such a key position helps counter massive losses for the Bulldogs, especially on the defensive side. Five players from that side of the line were taken in the first round of the NFL draft, led by top overall pick Travon Walker. Georgia opens Sept. 3 against Oregon and former defensive coordinator Dan Lanning.
LeBron James has agreed to a two-year, $97.1 million contract extension through the 2024-25 season with the Los Angeles Lakers
Victor Caratini hit a two-run single off Dodgers closer Craig Kimbrel in the 11th inning, rallying the Milwaukee Brewers over Los Angeles 5-4. A sensational catch by Dodgers center fielder Chris Taylor in the 10th kept the game tied. Taylor homered in the seventh to make it 3-all. Batting with the bases loaded and one out against Kimbrel, Caratini blooped a hit to right field that scored automatic runner Andrew McCutchen and Hunter Renfroe, who had reached on a bunt single. The Brewers won despite getting just five hits off seven pitchers. The teams have split the first two games of a four-game set. The Dodgers have lost two of three since a 12-game winning streak.
Former United States international Heather O’Reilly scored just four minutes into her Women’s Champions League debut to give Irish team Shelbourne a 1-0 win over Slovenian club Pomurje in the first round of qualifying for the group stage. O’Reilly came out of retirement at the age of 37 in order to play in the competition for the first time, which she said was the only thing missing on a resume that includes three Olympic gold medals and a World Cup victory. In Slovenia, O’Reilly scored with a header that looped over the goalkeeper after the Slovenian team failed to clear a cross into the area.
Frenzied talk of billionaires looking to buy beleaguered English soccer giant Manchester United has topped the sports agenda in Britain this week. That’s for the future though because staring United immediately in the face is the visit of Liverpool on Monday. Liverpool is looking to hand its fierce rival a third straight loss to open the season and that would really ramp up the pressure on recently hired United manager Erik ten Hag. The match is set to be preceded with a protest by a United fans' group against the club's American owners. A similar protest took place before a home match against Liverpool last year and the match was called off.
Southern California quarterback Caleb Williams isn’t a typical transfer since he followed Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma and is playing for the same coach he had last year. But his status as a quarterback transfer isn’t unusual at all. No position has been impacted more by the NCAA rule changes allowing players to transfer without sitting out a season. The top two quarterbacks in the 2021 class according to composite rankings of recruiting sites compiled by 247Sports already have left their original schools. Williams was ranked second. Quinn Ewers was ranked first and has transferred from Ohio State to Texas.
A 12-year-old Little League World Series player from Utah is in critical condition with what his family said was a head injury suffered when he fell off a bunk bed at the dormitory complex in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Easton Oliverson is a pitcher and outfielder for the Snow Canyon team out of Santa Clara, Utah. His dad, Jace Oliverson, is an assistant coach on the team. Oliverson posted on Facebook that doctors told him his son had punctured an artery which caused bleeding on the brain and needed a piece of skull removed. His uncle tells The Associated Press that Easton is using a breathing tube.
