WEST POINT — West Point residents who have accidentally left the water running may be eligible for a one-time forgiveness of sewer costs.
West Point City Administrator Randy Welding said there is already a policy that if a resident has a water line break, a one time forgiveness was granted.
At one time, Welding said, there had been a similar policy regarding the sewer that no longer is in place.
“This one is only going to cover if it doesn’t go down the sewer,” he said. “We had a lady that left a garden hose on for four days. She got a big bill. We thought if we wrote it up just the way the water (policy) reads, that they can have a one time forgiveness if it doesn’t go down their sewer.”
The new resolution does not forgive something like a running toilet going into the sewer, Welding said.
According to the resolution, a resident or business receiving a monthly water bill from West Point Utility that has had a water leak that is at least twice the amount of their normal water consumption up to 50,000 gallons, may be eligible for a reduction of their sewer cost directly related to the water leak.
Simmering-Cory Iowa Codification has been tasked with reviewing the city’s code.
According to correspondence between the city and Simmering-Cory, the company was reached out to in 2020 by West Point, seeking a codification update. At that time, the previous codification update had been done in 2007. A proposal had also been sought in 2015, but did not move forward.
City codes should be compiled, according to the state of Iowa, at least once every five years.
The cost to the city is $5,500.
Simmering-Cory will provide a Code Editor’s Review Report following review of the city’s codes and may include suggested topics for further review and sample language for the city to consider. The city will be provided three paper copies as well as a digital document.
