KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It seemed only fitting that, one day after Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson's family announced his death at the age of 87, the Kansas City Chiefs played the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night in a preseason rematch of the first Super Bowl.

It was that title game on a sunny January day in 1967 when many fans first saw “Lenny the Cool.”

Televised simultaneously by CBS and NBC from Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the inaugural meeting of the champions of the powerful NFL and upstart AFL was close into the second half. But that's when the Vince Lombardi's powerful Packers pulled away for a 35-10 victory over an exhausted Dawson and his plucky bunch of Chiefs.

Dawson would get his Super Bowl ring, of course. He led the Chiefs back three years later, where Kansas City would beat the Minnesota Vikings in the final championship game staged before the NFL and AFL merged together.

“As a child, I just remember being on the Chiefs' field and looking up at Len,” Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt recalled. “Of course, as a child, all the players were huge and he was one of the smaller ones of the group. But he was the one with the ‘it’ factor. He was the leader of the team. And I remember looking at him like that.”

Not surprisingly, the Chiefs found plenty of ways to remember Dawson on Thursday night.

Patrick Mahomes, who became close to Dawson in recent years, wore a hoody with his predecessor’s image on the back of it. The Chiefs’ helmets carried his No. 16 on them. And on the Chiefs Radio Network, where Dawson flourished in a second career as a Hall of Fame broadcaster, stories of Dawson flowed during a lengthy pregame tribute.

Elsewhere in Kansas City, the fountains outside historic Union Station were specially lit to celebrate his life.

Perhaps most poignantly, though, Mahomes trotted onto the field for the only time all game — the Chiefs' first offensive possession — and lined up his players in the same kind of stacked huddle that Dawson employed.

The Chiefs took a delay of game penalty, Mahomes trotted off the field and the preseason game resumed.

“I've had people reach out to me and say, ‘Hey, I cheered for the Chiefs because of Len Dawson when I was a little kid, even though I didn’t live in Kansas City,” said the 57-year-old Hunt, whose father Lamar Hunt helped found the AFL along with the Chiefs, who began play as the Dallas Texans before moving north a year after Dawson arrived.

The young Hunt remembers growing up in the locker room in the 1970s, and how Dawson always kept an eye out for him.

“He’s synonymous with the success of the early Chiefs organization, and those early teams that really helped establish the Chiefs in the American Football League,” Hunt said. “But when you step back and think about him in terms of Kansas City, he is synonymous as someone who cared about the community and finding ways to give back.”

Dawson, who was also known to millions for his work on HBO's iconic “Inside the NFL,” had been in declining health the past few years. He went into hospice care on Aug. 12 before dying this week with his wife, Linda, by his side.

While he had stepped back from the public spotlight, Dawson remained a revered figure around Arrowhead Stadium, where the television broadcast booth was named in his honor. Much of his memorabilia is on display in the team's Hall of Fame, and his name hung between former teammates Mike Garrett and Bobby Bell in the stadium's ring of honor.

“I probably didn’t appreciate it at the time because I was fairly young,” Hunt said, “but I’ve come to appreciate it over the last 20 or 30 years — when I run into someone who is not from Kansas City but they’re a fan of pro football, they will frequently bring up Len Dawson’s name. That’s who they remember from those early Chiefs.”

The New York Jets and the New York Giants held a joint preseason practice for the first time in 17 years. Coaches Robert Saleh and Brian Daboll want to make the workout an annual event. Both coaches stressed being respectful in the workout at the Giants’ training facility. There seemed to be no injuries, though Giants linebacker Azeez Ojulari hurt a leg running sprints. The Jets and Giants also have played an annual preseason game since 1969 and this year's version is on Sunday.

The Miami Dolphins canceled their joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday after a stomach bug sidelined multiple players. Coach Mike McDaniel confirmed the news Thursday morning. The Dolphins still plan to play the Eagles on Saturday night at Hard Rock Stadium in their preseason finale. It isn't yet known which of the starters will play. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni says no one on the team had exhibited any symptoms. The Eagles held their own practice Thursday. The two teams held their only joint practice Wednesday.

Frustrated New York Jets wide receiver Denzel Mims has requested to be traded through a statement released by his agent. Ron Slavin wrote that “it's just time” and that it's clear Mims "does not have a future with the Jets.” Mims was a second-round pick in 2020 out of Baylor. He has just 31 catches for 490 yards and no touchdowns in 20 games over two seasons and was low on the depth chart during training camp. The Jets had no immediate comment on the trade request.

Baker Mayfield and the Browns will have a reunion on Sept. 11. The game is already being hyped, but Myles Garrett is treating it like any other. Cleveland's All-Pro defensive end insists he isn't making any more of Mayfield's matchup against the Browns, who traded the quarterback to Carolina this summer. Garrett wasn't surprised his former teammate won the Panthers' starting job and said he doesn't wish any “ill” toward Mayfield. Back-to-back No. 1 overall picks in Cleveland, Garrett and Mayfield helped the Browns end their long playoff drought and revive a fallen franchise. They're on opposite sidelines now, but Garrett doesn't consider Mayfield an enemy — just another quarterback.

The Minnesota Vikings have acquired backup quarterback Nick Mullens from the Las Vegas Raiders for a conditional 2024 seventh-round draft pick. The Vikings say the deal will be finalized as soon as Mullens passes a physical. The Raiders will get the 2024 pick only if Mullens is on the active roster for at least one game this season. Mullens will compete with second-year player Kellen Mond and veteran Sean Mannion to be the No. 2 quarterback behind Kirk Cousins.

KaVontae Turpin became the first player in nine seasons to have kickoff and punt return touchdowns in the same game, and the Dallas Cowboys beat the Los Angeles Chargers 32-18. Turpin signed with the Cowboys on July 28 after garnering MVP honors in the United States Football League this past spring. Before Turpin, the last player to run back a punt and kickoff in the same game — preseason, regular season or playoffs — was Detroit’s Jeremy Ross on Dec. 8, 2013, against Philadelphia.

First-year Las Vegas Raiders coach Josh McDaniels has been searching this preseason for a dependable offensive line to protect Derek Carr once the start starts. The Raiders have used 14 offensive linemen in 13 rotations across 20 possessions in their first two preseason games in a process McDaniels described as normal for this time of year. The results so far haven't been great with the Raiders allowing nine sacks in the first two preseason games as the issues in protection that were a problem in 2021 haven't been solved as of yet.

Packers to sit Aaron Rodgers, starters in preseason finale

The Seattle Seahawks hope they are creating the foundation for the future despite major uncertainty about their quarterback situation. Seattle's offseason featured a significant roster overhaul highlighted by the trade of franchise quarterback Russell Wilson to Denver and release of star linebacker Bobby Wagner. The Seahawks still have plenty of talent, such as wide receivers DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, linebacker Jordyn Brooks and safeties Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams. But the quarterback situation with Geno Smith and Drew Lock as the options hangs over Seattle as its biggest question entering the season.

Rookie first-round draft pick Chris Olave caught a 20-yard pass for his first touchdown of the preseason in the New Orleans Saints’ 20-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Friday night. Packers quarterback Jordan Love and rookie fourth-round pick Romeo Doubs connected on a touchdown pass for the second straight week. Danny Etling scored for the Packers on a 51-yard keeper. Olave’s touchdown capped his productive week after he performed well in the Saints’ joint practices with the Packers on Tuesday and Wednesday.
