STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Honda has issued a recall on over 112,000 Honda Ridgeline pickup trucks sold or registered in northern states, including New York, over an issue that could cause the vehicles’ fuel tanks to become detached.

The issue affects 112,060 Honda Ridgelines from model years 2006-2014.

The recall is specific to vehicles sold or registered in “Salt Belt” states, where the heavy road salting during winter months can cause corrosion that may cause the fuel tank to detach from the vehicle, which could lead to fuel leakage and safety concerns.

“Over time, the accumulated de-icing agents/mud/dirt mixture could cause the frame mounting surface, where the fuel tank mounting bands are attached, to corrode and possibly separate from the frame. If this occurs, an unsecured fuel tank can become damaged from undercarriage impact, which can possibly result in fuel leakage,” according to the recall notice. “Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.”

Honda has received five complaints related to the recall, though no injuries or fires have been reported to this point.

To remedy the issue, drivers should bring their vehicle to a certified dealer which will implement the following fixes, based on the level of corrosion.

Honda is expected to send owner notification letters on August 1.
