A Jacksonville man was arrested after shooting a man to death in Colonial Oaks early Tuesday morning in Sarasota.

Patrick Eckardt, 30, has been charged with one count of second-degree murder after allegedly killing the unidentified victim, according to authorities.

Sarasota County Sheriff's deputies were called to the 2500 block of Green Oak Court at 1:48 a.m., finding a 64-year-old man dead on the lawn with several gunshot wounds.

According to witnesses, Eckardt grabbed a pair of yard clippers and began cutting internet cables outside the victim's residence, prompting the victim to meet Eckardt on his lawn.

An affidavit from the Sheriff's Office says the pair got into an intense argument before Eckardt shot "an entire magazine of ammunition" at the victim. He then fled the scene.

A sergeant pulled over Eckardt for a traffic stop while he was traveling westbound on Fruitville Road shortly after 2 a.m. According to the affidavit, Eckardt "made an utterance" that a gun was in his glove box.

After being transported to the Sheriff's Office, detectives interviewed Eckardt, who claimed he shot the victim in self-defense after an argument escalated to physical violence.

Eckardt said the victim punched him in the face several times before pulling out and using pepper spray on him, infuriating Eckardt into pulling out his weapon and shooting the victim multiple times.

Detectives noted that Eckardt did not have injuries consistent with being punched or pepper-sprayed.

Details from an interview with another witness said Eckardt believes he's being followed and tracked by strangers, and the victim's confrontation with Eckardt prompted the murder.

The affidavit also says that Eckardt admitted he "may have gone too far by shooting (the victim) more than he should have."

Eckardt remains in custody without bond. The investigation is ongoing.
