WATSONVILLE, Calif. – Multiple fatalities were reported Thursday after two airplanes collided while trying to land at the Watsonville Municipal Airport in Santa Cruz County, according to the city.
The collision was reported just before 3 p.m., the city said in a statement posted to social media.

Tropical storm warnings have been issued for a stretch of the lower Texas Gulf Coast and part of Mexico's northeast shoreline amid forecasts that an offshore disturbance would become a tropical storm in coming hours. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Friday evening that an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft found maximum sustained winds near 35 mph in the slowly strengthening system. It's in the Gulf some 400 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Rio Grande river and moving to the northwest. A tropical storm warning is in effect for parts of Mexico as well as the Texas coast from Port Mansfield south to the mouth of the Rio Grande River.
TIJUANA, Mexico — Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador spoke in Tijuana on Friday morning, following a weekend of chaos in the border city that left more than 30 vehicles burned and residents in panic.
Prosecutors in Mexico say they have arrested the attorney general in the previous administration. The arrest Friday was apparently on charges that Jesús Murillo Karam mishandled investigations into the 2014 disappearance of 43 students from a radical teacher college. He was attorney general from 2012 to 2015 under then President Enrique Peña Nieto. The current attorney general has accused Murillo Karam of “orchestrating a massive media trick" in leading a cover-up in the case. Murillo Karam announced in 2014 that the students had been killed and burned at a garbage dump by a drug gang. But the investigation allegedly used torture, improper arrest and mishandling of evidence, allowing most of the suspects to walk free. The motive for the abudction remains unclear eight years later.
Colorado Rockies right-hander Antonio Senzatela will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee. Senzatela was hurt during his start Thursday at St. Louis. He and first baseman Elehuris Montero were both racing toward Brendan Donovan’s second-inning grounder when Senzatela broke toward first base in a sudden change of direction. His knee buckled and he fell to the ground, holding his leg in his hands and clearly in pain. Manager Bud Black says Senzatela will have surgery and hopefully be ready to return in six to eight months.

Bernhard Langer, the 64-year-old star who the event in 2014, also shot 71. Defending champion Cameron Beckman had a 73.
A federal appeals court has cleared the way for a lawsuit to proceed against guards and officials at a privately run north Louisiana jail where an inmate died with a fractured skull in 2015. The lawsuit includes allegations that guards at Monroe's Richwood Correctional Center sometimes beat and pepper-sprayed handcuffed prisoners in an area without security cameras. A federal judge had thrown out much of the lawsuit but a panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans reinstated it last month. On Friday the appeals court issued an order denying a rehearing, sending the case back to the district court.

A Pennsylvania judge has ordered three Republican-controlled counties to include undated mail-in ballots in their certified results of the May election. The Republican judge sided Friday with the administration of Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf in a dispute that has stalled statewide certification of the primary results for governor and U.S. Senate. Berks, Fayette and Lancaster counties were ordered to count about 800 mail-in ballots that lack handwritten dates on their return envelopes. State law requires voters to date the envelopes, but the Commonwealth Court judge ruled the lack of a date was a minor irregularity.
Top-ranked Daniil Medvedev moved into the Western & Southern Open semifinals Friday as he prepares for his U.S. Open title defense, beating 11th-seeded Taylor Fritz 7-6 (1), 6-3. Medvedev, the 26-year-old Russian banned from Wimbledon for his country’s invasion of Ukraine, won the 2019 Western & Southern Open. He looked sharper Friday than he did last week in Montreal in a round-of-32 loss to Nick Kyrgios. Medvedev will face No. 7 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals. Tsitsipas outlasted John Isner 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-3. Unseeded American Madison Keys, also a 2019 winner in the event, advanced to the women’s semifinals with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. Keys will face two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.
Will Power has tied Mario Andretti for the most poles in IndyCar series history. The Australian won the 67th pole of his IndyCar career on Friday at World Wide Technology Raceway outside of St. Louis. Now his focus is on Saturday night's race and his slim hold in the IndyCar points standings. Power has a six-point lead over Scott Dixon with three races remaining. But there are seven drivers separated by 59 points in the standings and 11 drivers are mathematically eligible to win the title.

Michigan Republican gubernatorial nominee Tudor Dixon has chosen former state Rep. Shane Hernandez of Port Huron as her running mate in her bid to unseat Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Hernandez served two terms in the Michigan House ending in 2020, when he ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House. He chaired the powerful budget-writing House Appropriations Committee for one term. Dixon said in a statement Friday that “Hernandez as lieutenant governor will help to improve our schools, create safer communities and improve our economy.” Hernandez said Dixon’s “vision is the right one for Michigan."
A man who shot one classmate to death and wounded three others five years ago in a Washington state high school, apologized to his victims before he was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison. Caleb Sharpe, who was 15 at the time of the 2017 shootings at Freeman High School, pleaded guilty earlier this year in Spokane County Superior Court. The 20-year-old Sharpe showed no emotion as Superior Court Judge Michael Price handed down a sentence Friday that was longer than what prosecutors had requested. He will get credit for the nearly five years he has already been in custody. Prior to sentencing, Sharpe apologized to his victims in his first public comments since his arrest five years ago.
Authorities say a young mother is the third member of her family to die in a gas explosion at her Missouri home. Twenty-two-year-old Myranda Gale Golden was hurt Monday when her home in the far southern Missouri town of Wyatt erupted in flames and was taken to a burn unit in Memphis, Tennessee, for treatment. Wyatt is about 130 miles northeast of Memphis. The Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office in Missouri said in a news release that it was notified Friday that she had died. She was the mother of a 3-year-old who died Thursday and her significant other, Corey Coleman, died in the immediate aftermath of the blast. Seven others remain hospitalized in stable condition.
Isco Alarcón’s debut was not enough to lift Sevilla to a first victory in the Spanish league. Sevilla remained winless after a 1-1 draw at home against Valladolid. The visitors took the lead with a goal by Anuar Mohamed in the 80th before Sevilla equalized through Karim Rekik in the 86th. Isco arrived after his contract with Real Madrid was not renewed at the end of last season and came off the bench in the 69th minute. Sevilla had opened with a 2-1 loss at Osasuna. In a victory for Georgia’s Republican governor, a federal judge has reinstated a work requirement in the state’s plan to expand Medicaid coverage to more low-income residents. U.S. District Judge Lisa Godbey Wood said the Biden administration’s decision to revoke approval of the work requirement and a related Georgia proposal to charge some Medicaid recipients monthly premiums was arbitrary and capricious. The work requirement was approved by then-President Donald Trump’s administration, but the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Centers announced last month that it was revoking approval of that plan and the premium requirement.
