On Wednesday, the Halifax County Service Authority resumed filling the historic water tank downtown on Houston Street in the town of Halifax.

The process used a pump and hose system for approximately six to eight hours to reach the necessary ballast weight calculated by Southern Corrosion which has been repairing, refurbishing, repainting and up-fitting the structure for colocation purposes.

As this work is being finished, Elliott Electric crews utilized large lift equipment to install electric facilities expected to be completed by the end of Thursday.

The Virginia Department of Transportation approved the continued temporary road closing of Houston Street where the service authority set up barricades to protect the hoses, adding construction barrels. Business owners located at this section of Houston Street will have access for their employees and customers, but all other motorists were encouraged to use Cemetery Street and avoid the barricade and construction barrel section set up by VDOT and the Halifax Police Department.

Houston Street was accessible from South Main Street via the intersection with Cemetery Street at all times.

The Halifax Police Department will monitor the barricade/barrel area and assist with notifying business owners as necessary.

Houston Street was opened each day after the HCSA and Elliott equipment is removed. Telecommunication facilities are being upgraded on the repainted water tower as part of the town’s continuing beautification and economic revitalization efforts.
